E.         Overview of local reproductive health needs – Ms. Beth Britton

Ø       Beth Britton, WUSD supporting staff for the committee, gave an overview of the process that resulted in the committee formation.  She said that the Health Index Committee formed a Family Team. The Family Team studied a variety of issues and one of those at the top of the list was a need for sex education.  NAU nursing students later completed a research study on the issue and developed a PowerPoint that Sandy presented to the School Board last spring.  Later Arizona Youth Partnership (AYP), a non-profit with statewide ties, came to Williams to explain the services their non-profit might be able to offer, free of charge to Williams.  In the fall of 2007, AYP received a grant that would provide the financial resources (curriculum and staff) to conduct abstinence education.  The School Board then formed the Sex Education Advisory Committee to review all of he issues and make a recommendation to the Board.

Ø       The Sex Education Committee may recommend that Williams USD not proceed with any Sex Education program.  Some school districts and states are looking at more comprehensive programs.  If it is determined a program is needed, the Sex Education Committee will need to decide if the curriculum recommended by AYP is appropriate for the Williams community and the school.
