Dear WEMS Families,
Today at 9:15 students and staff had an evacuation drill out to our soccer field. Our drill was a success and ensures the safety of our campus.
Thank you for your ongoing support!

Thursday May 5th will be the final YOUTH OPEN GYM for this school year and will resume next school year.

Our baseball and softball programs have qualified for the State Playoffs this year and our softball team will be defending their State Championship from last year. The baseball team finished the year ranked #4 in the State and the softball team finished ranked #3. Both our programs will be hosting the first two rounds of the State Playoffs at home. The baseball program will host on Tuesday, 5/3 @ 4 pm and again on Saturday, 5/7 @ 4 pm if we win on Tuesday. The softball program will host on Wednesday, 5/4 @ 4 pm and again on Friday, 5/6 @ 4 pm if we win on Wednesday. Both are facilities are open and make it difficult to take tickets, but being that these games are State Playoff games, we have to charge admission to each game. The tickets can be purchased through the GoFan Application on your phone. The easiest thing to do is to go to AzPreps365, click on baseball or softball bracket and then select 1A Bracket, click on the tickets button next to our games. The ticket fee is $10 for adult and $5 for students with an additional service fee charged to each ticket. Administration will be walking around during the games to ask to see your tickets on your phone so we can validate the tickets. We enjoy the opportunity to hosts the State Playoffs and appreciate your support in purchasing the tickets to support high school athletics. Please contact Mr. Echeverria at the high school with any questions. Thanks again and Go Vikings!

From the USDOE, the NIL, and the LPF:
"The consequence of not learning to read is significant. It is important to understand the impact that early literacy instruction has on a student’s future. According to the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy (Gaille, 2017) as well as the Literacy Project Foundation (2019), the following statistics outline the state of literacy in the United States"...
14% of the US adult population cannot read.
19% of high school graduates cannot read.
85% of juveniles who interact with the juvenile court system are considered functionally illiterate.
70% of inmates in America’s prisons cannot read above the fourth-grade level.
45 million Americans are functionally illiterate and cannot read above a fifth-grade level.
50% of adults cannot read a book written at an eighth-grade level.
3 out of 4 people on welfare can’t read.
Only 1/3 of fourth graders reach the proficient reading level.
WUSD # 2 will continue to highlight the importance of literacy and reading in all of our students. We will continue to look at all the levers, resources, and mechanisms that we can pull to continue to emphasize the importance of Literacy Skills in our students.

Kudos to Ms. Oswald at WEMS for another successful year of Scholastic Book Fairs. This year, due to your wonderful support, WEMS has generated almost 800 new Scholastic Books that will very soon be on our bookshelves, ready for kids to check out! Although we were disappointed that we could not offer BOGO this spring, it's a wonderful feeling knowing that ALL students will soon have access to these new Scholastic Books in their very own WEMS Library!
Soon, we will post vital data related to Literacy in the U.S. to our FB and Twitter pages. We encourage you to check it out and to continue to find ways to support and prioritize reading and literacy in the home.
