Greetings Families & Staff, This is Mr. Evans with an important cybersecurity update from WUSD # 2. We are writing to update you on a cybersecurity breach that has affected PowerSchool, the company that provides our student information system. PowerSchool recently discovered unauthorized access to its systems and is working to address the situation all across N. America and Canada. According to PowerSchool, an unauthorized party used a compromised credential to gain access to some user data. The party was able to then gain access to the management console of the platform’s PowerSource tool. The company has further shared that the breach has been contained and that no malware was discovered. The data that may have been compromised includes family and educator contact information. PowerSchool is now working to prevent any of the compromised data from further unauthorized access or misuse. The company believes that this data has been deleted and will not be shared anywhere publicly. PowerSchool is working with the FBI. It is worth noting that this breach is on PowerSchool’s end and has not affected any of our other systems in the district. When contact/demographic info/data is compromised like this, there is a greater risk of potential in receiving a spam/phishing email or spam/fraudulent phone call from a complete stranger. Please be diligent when opening emails, clicking on links, and engaging with strangers on the phone. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your attention to this important update. Regards, Mr. Evans WUSD # 2 Superintendent eevans@wusd2.org
